Do I have to be a faculty member to use the Xlab?
No, Graduate students may perform experiments in the Xlab and they are also eligible for <xlab grants>.
Do I have to be affiliated with UC Berkeley?
Yes.
Do you have subjects available for my experiment?
We have a 2000+ and expanding Human Subject pool. Subsets of that may not be eligible for your particular experiment (depending upon the nature of the experiment).
Sona Systems allows filtering by:
- Gender
- Hispanic ethnic origin
- Age the subject moved to the U.S.A.
- Race
- Native English speaker
- GPA
- Expected year of graduation
- Birth year
- How the subject heard of the Xlab
Researchers will receive email notice of new functionality or changing services as they are added or modified. Our web site, <xlab.berkeley.edu>, and our <xflash newsletter>, will also announce major Xlab service changes.
Can I use my own subjects? How will they be paid?
Yes, you can use your own subjects but they will still be required to <register> and <sign up> via Sona Systems, so that future tracking can be done effectively, filtering out duplicate participants in a particular experiment topic.
Do you have software available for experiments?
Please see the menu link to the right, <software in the lab> for details.
We welcome submissions of freeware and/or proprietary experimental software to <sweet@haas.berkeley.edu>.
For recommendations concerning experimental software and/or freeware applications available, contact <sweet@haas.berkeley.edu>.
The Xlab will configure finished, tested applications to run in our private network laboratory.
The Xlab does not offer to:
Write, debug, and compile code into executables.
Create applications via program creation tools such as Ztree, Director, etc. Write scripts and Web/Database applications.
Can I use my own software?
Please see <using your own software> from the menu bar to the right.
What are software design requirements:
We prefer that your software not be "beta" - we lack the resources to help you debug or customize your experiment. We expect that your software is designed for client/server (i.e., we anticipate two executables, one for the server and one for the client), and that all data is collected into one file on the server. If your software expects an uninterrupted ethernet connection and makes no allowances for timeouts and retries, you will be at risk for potential failures that could disrupt your experiment.
Can you help me with programming my experiment?
The Xlab will configure finished, tested applications to run in our private network laboratory.
The Xlab does not offer to:
Write, debug, and compile code into executables.
Create applications via program creation tools such as Ztree, Director, etc.
Write scripts and Web/Database applications.
Do I have to pay to use the Xlab?
No, there are no user fees at the present time. You are required to pay subjects for participation in your experiment.
The Xlab offers <grants> for subject payments.
We can also execute fund transfers from one of your funds if it is not already administered by IBER.
Do I have to pay for the subjects?
Researchers are required to pay Xlab subjects for participation in an experiment.
Is there grant money available from the Xlab?
Yes. See the <grants> pages on the menu to the right.
How does human subjects (IRB/CPHS) approval work?
See the <human subjects> page and related links on the menu to the right. After you have reviewed the above information contact Xlab Administrator Brenda Naputi with questions: <naputi@haas.berkeley.edu>
How long does this approval take?
The process takes approximately seven business days, from beginning to end, once all the paperwork is completed and submitted to the Xlab.
How do I schedule an experiment?
Contact Brenda Naputi <naputi@haas.berkeley.edu>, Xlab Administrator, to schedule an experiment.
How much advance notice do you need to schedule and recruit human subjects for an experiment?
Ten business days advance notice is required to schedule and recruit subjects.
What hours does the Xlab operate?
Mondays and Thursdays 11:15am-5:00pm
Tuesdays and Fridays 9:00am-5:00pm
Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays CLOSED
Can I play audios/videos/etc for the subjects?
Yes - if these devices are accounted for in your CPHS approved protocol.
Can I audiotape/videotape the subjects?
Yes - if these devices are accounted for in your CPHS approved protocol. Be sure to check the <CPHS approval documents> page for audio/video consent waivers.
Can you isolate the subjects from each other, aurally and/or visually?
Yes, we can provide earmuff-style headphones and privacy dividers.
Can you create pairs or groups of subjects, isolated from one another?
Yes, subject to the dimensional constraints of the room.
Can I collect data from my subjects using medical devices (EEG, MRI, ECG/EKG, etc)?
At present time, our <XLAB MASTER PROTOCOL> does not include language that would allow devices that collect medical data from human subjects.
Can you measure reaction times, mouse movements or pupil movements?
At present time, our <XLAB MASTER PROTOCOL> does not include language that would allow devices that collect physiological data from human subjects.
Do I have to be physically present for my experiments?
No. Research assistants typically carry out execution of the experiment after the first couple of sessions.
Can I use the Xlab environment away from campus?
The Xlab is working towards providing geographically mobile experiment equipment and services. Researchers will receive email notice of new functionality or changing services as they are added or modified. Our web site, <xlab.berkeley.edu>, and our <xflash newsletter>, will also announce major Xlab service changes.
Can you help me find collaborators?
Yes! Contact the Xlab Research Director, Bob Barde: <barde@haas.berkeley.edu>
Can I publish the results of my research on the IBER and/or Xlab Web site?
Yes, we have a working papers section in the IBER web site at: <http://repositories.cdlib.org/iber/>
Submissions are made to the IBER editor at <iber@haas.berkeley.edu>
