Welcome to

THE XLAB

about the xlab:

Founded in 2004, the Xlab--more formally, the Experimental Social Science Laboratory--is a laboratory for conducting experiment-based investigations of issues of interest to social scientists.

what is the xlab?

The physical infrastructure of the Xlab consists of 40 laptop computers linked through a private network. The computers can run networked experiments, as well as those based on the Internet.  Xlab’s human infrastructure includes experienced IT professionals, dedicated lab administrators, and a subject pool in excess of 2,500 members.  Administrative support includes subject recruitment, payment distribution and facilitation of IRB clearance under a Master Protocol.

why is there an xlab?

Controlled, computer-based laboratory methods based on experimental design are significantly altering the research paradigm.  Xlab was established to help investigators overcome historically high costs of equipment, subject recruitment; physical laboratory space and physical plan maintenance for this type of research. Xlab lowers those costs, setting new standards for experimental facilities, changing the traditional cost-benefit calculus for experimental researchers.

who makes xlab possible?

The Xlab was established with a grant from the National Science Foundation and the Vice Chancellor for Research.  It has been generously supported by the Dean of the Haas School of Business, the College of Letters and Science, the California Management Review, and Hewlett Packard.  Xlab is administered by the Institute of Business and Economic Research; the faculty director is Prof. Barbara Mellers.
